5 US States With The Highest Paid Teachers

Although the work carried out by teachers is vastly appreciated, they are mostly under waged. 

Earlier this year (in April, 2018), a massive public teacher protest was spread across the US, to showcase 10 years or more of low salaries and complaints about how several states choose tax cuts over investment in education. This wave of demonstrations has resulted in many resignations by teachers with over 15 years of experience in schools and a transition to other professions, or even relocation to other countries abroad to seek a better life.

While there is much discussion on the average and low wages teachers get, some credit should be given to those states who retain certain standards in terms of their policy and funding for education. This article highlights the 5 states where teachers are more fairly compensated than in others, based on a research conducted by Reuters in 2017.

1. Alaska

Thanks to a consistent rise in the level of education and funding provided, Alaska has become one of the nation’s highest payed state for teachers. In particular, the average annual salary for Elementary School teachers in Alaska is $73,050. Typically, a teacher there can earn from $52,580 and go up to $99,400. It seems that the approximately 8000 teachers in the 510 or more public schools in Alaska, can get by better than their colleagues in most states. It is estimated that there is one teacher for every 17 students, compared to the national average of 1:16.

2. Connecticut 

The average starting salary for a teacher in Connecticut is approximately $69,397, whereas teachers start at an average of nearly $48,390, pulling in up to $104,300 per year at most. As of 2011, Connecticut pays it teachers far more compared to all of the other states in the United States, only to be beaten by major states like New York. For this reason, competition can be somewhat fierce when it comes to teaching in Connecticut because of the high pay and the small size of the state. Still, teaching isn’t nearly as competitive as being a stock broker or working in the business sector, and qualified teachers are always in demand. 

3. Massachusetts 

Massachusetts pays its teachers on average over $76,000 per year, making it the fifth highest paying state in the United States on average. Along with the high pay, Massachusetts ranks as the number one state in both reading and mathematics skills, though the state somehow falls to 20th when it comes to graduation numbers. Still, Massachusetts is an excellent place to be a teacher, and since the cost of living in Massachusetts isn’t as high as in a lot of other states outside of Boston, teachers can easily afford to provide for themselves and their families. 

4. California

 

Despite its reputation of being one of the worst states in the US for education, California actually pays its teachers more than most states. In California, teachers make about $78,000 per year on average; however, the cost of living in most major cities in California where jobs are available for teachers is high. California also lives up to its reputation, with student test scores putting California in 46th and 49th place when it comes to math and reading scores. California also ranks in the bottom 10 of all of the states when it comes to graduation percentages, although there was a notable improvement in high school graduation rate in 2017, reaching 83.2% percent for the class of 2016. The great issue however is how California is one of the states with the highest drop-out rate from colleges.

5. New York

 

Teachers in New York were the highest paid in the United States as of the 2010/2011 school year, averaging nearly $73,000 per year in salary. For 2018-2019, a newly appointed teacher in New York will earn from $56,711 if owning a bachelor’s degree without prior experience and about $63,751 if he or she holds a master’s degree. This salary can grow to $85,794 if in possession of a master’s degree and up to eight years of teaching experience. While teachers’ salaries in New York are high, the cost of living in the most expensive state in the US needs to be factored in. Despite high teacher salaries, New York State is still in the bottom half of states when it comes to math and reading scores, ranking number 31, even though average attendance is strongest in New York State.

Conclusion

While teachers’ work and contribution to society, despite the many challenges they come across, is priceless, a decent salary is definitely one way of showing the state’s gratitude and acknowledgment of their service. Hence, it is refreshing to see that some states persist to invest in their teachers and the education of their students, as this is the greatest investment possible to the future and progress. Hopefully, the recent strikes will awake other states too and make them rise to the occasion so as to improve funding and payment of their teachers, despite the gloomy picture shown in statistics and legislations of the coming years.

The best ways you can advance your career in 2013 is to take advantage of social networking sites to help you in your job search. Networking online with the right contacts can open the door to new job offers. Join websites like LinkedIn, Facebook and Twitter to find new opportunities that you may not have found through old-fashioned outlets like newspaper job ads or referrals. LinkedIn is especially useful since it focuses on developing only professional connections. Join their forums and participate regularly so that you can seem like an expert in your field. You can also intentionally request to be linked to influential people that can help advance your career.

3. Network with professionals in real life

While it is great to network with others online, you should never forget to network off-line also. You can go to local industry events that you find interesting and meet new people in that field. Usually the meetings are free, and you can leave with a significant amount of contacts and potential business relationships that can help propel your career.

4. Take initiative at your current job

Due to the economy, many companies are financially stressed and are trying to save money. If you have extra time in your schedule, ask your supervisor for extra projects or offer to lead discussions or meetings for your company. Your boss will appreciate you taking the initiative and asking for more responsibility, especially since it relieves some of the burden from their shoulders. When it is time for promotions, your boss will remember your positivity and ability to be a leader.

5. Take advantage of online learning

Another great suggestion is to take advantage of the different educational materials available for purchase online. There are countless PDFs, ebooks and much more information available online that can help you increase your knowledge about your career.

Finding a career you love is the holy grail for some people. You can significantly increase your odds by networking with others, improving your job skills by continuing to learn, and letting your supervisor know that you are ready to move forward and have more responsibility.

Aura Pack : Stay-fresh film for fruits and vegetables

DigInfoTV presented Aura Pack, developed by Belle Green Wise, a film that helps to keep vegetables fresh. The freshness-preserving effect is achieved by controlling evaporation through molecular activity, and controlling excess respiration. 

"Aura Pack has three features. The first concerns the fact that vegetables have a water content of at least 90%. As long as water isn't lost, they stay crisp and fresh. If vegetables are wrapped in this film, it's hard for water to evaporate. The second feature of this film is, it controls respiration. Like people, vegetables take in oxygen and release CO2. The more congenial the environment, the more stable this process is, making it harder for vegetables to get bruised. In a pack, it's possible to create a congenial environment. The third feature of Aura Pack is, it resists condensation, so it's hard for moisture to form. As I mentioned earlier, if vegetables don't lose water, it's hard for water droplets to form on the film."

Until now, films have included stay-fresh measures such as holes. But Aura Pack works on vegetables through its special processing, making it hard for them to lose water.

"In supermarkets, especially after last year's earthquake, the summer temperature setting was increased from 25 to 28 C degrees. A three-degree increase in temperature makes vegetables very prone to bruising. Vegetables that had been sold loose can be given a longer shelf life by wrapping them in this stay-fresh film. Discard rates are reduced substantially. So retailers are using Aura Pack as well."

Leafy vegetables like spinach can be kept fresh for 2-3 days longer with Aura Pack. In long-term storage, persimmons sealed in the film last for 3-4 months. It can also be used to adjust shipments, so persimmons picked in November can be eaten in April.

"Aura Pack is useful when exporting value-added fruits. Shipping by sea takes at least two weeks to Asia and 3-4 weeks to Europe. Fruits and vegetables are inevitably vulnerable. So, using this stay-fresh film makes it possible to export them by sea at low cost."

5 Useful Tax Credits for Small Businesses

There are really tons of different tax credits and other breaks out there for small businesses. What follows is just a list of some of the most useful that will provide the most savings come tax time.

Reduce Your Taxes by Insuring Your Family

Those who are self-employed must already pay full income and Social Security tax on all their earnings. They are also responsible for providing for they and their family's own health care costs. A new tax credit is designed for those who are self-employed and pay full insurance premiums for themselves and/or their family. This new tax credit allows to reduce their taxable income by the total amount paid annually in premiums.

Work Opportunity Tax Credit

Though this is not a new credit, it is important for the strengthening of communities and many may not know about it. There are many populations out there, from at-risk young adults to veterans, that cannot find jobs or face certain roadblocks to employment. These roadblocks in no way mean that these are unsuitable employees. The Work Opportunity Tax credit allows one to reduce their taxable income through the hiring of these individuals.

Spread Out Debt Cancellation Costs

Many small businesses have faced large, mounting debts in recent years and are working to get them reduced or eliminated. However, when this happens, the total dollar amount of the debt is added to one's taxable income for that year. A new Act allows for the amount in debt cancellation to be spread out of a five year period, reducing a small business's annual tax liability. The amount canceled is divided up evenly over that five year period and that amount is added to the annual income tax liability.

Tax Credits for Providing Health Insurance for Employees

There is now a full and partial tax credit for small business owners who provide insurance benefits to their employees. Whether one qualifies for a full or partial tax credit depends on the size of the business. Business owners must be paying at least 50% of their employees insurance premiums in order to qualify for this tax credit. The credit allows for up a 35% in the taxable amount of what you paid for insurance.

Tax Credits for Increasing Research Levels 

One of the most important, yet also most expensive, parts of running a business is research and development of new products or services. No matter how expensive it is, it is important to improving our future and a new tax credit is designed to help promote the growth of businesses research efforts. A tax credit worth up to 20% of your expenditures is offered to businesses who are increasing their research budgets and efforts, hoping to spurn new growth and development across small business industries.

A small business is always looking for a way to reduce their taxable income or to reduce the cost of doing or opening a business, without having to scrimp on their product or services. This is why it is so important to understand the various tax credits out there that are available, waiting for one to take advantage of them. They can provide a real, significant savings for many small businesses.

Microsoft Research : Predicting and Understanding the 2012 Election

For more than 75 years, elections forecasting has been static - ask a random sample of a representative group of voters who they would vote for if the election were held today, and then report the poll result. 

In this talk, David Rothschild first demonstrates that the same samples could be addressed with other questions to produce a more accurate standard forecast (such as binary winner or expected vote share). Second, he challenges the standard forecast, stating that what most stakeholders really want and need are more innovative forecasts, like probability of victory or even probability distributions.

Third, David shows how both standard and innovative forecasts can be made more efficient with new methods that utilize more cost-effective, non-representative samples and, in time, passively generated social media data. Fourth, he shows how Microsoft is going to be a leader in this new innovation. Finally, David tells you know who is going to win the election!

Microsoft Windows 8 Now Available for Pre Order

Finally we get to see all price options for Microsoft’s next-generation Computer OS - the Windows 8. Microsoft just announced that enthusiastic early adopters can pre-order their copies from major retailers, ensuring that a packaged Windows 8 DVD will have your name on it at launch.

With the launch of Windows 8 rapidly approaching, a new wave of tablets, convertibles, hybrids, Notebooks, Ultrabooks and all-in-one PCs are set to hit the shelves later this month. Microsoft also said PC makers such as ASUS, Acer, Asustek, Dell, HP, Samsung and Sony were also now taking pre-orders for machines with Windows 8 pre-installed. 

Microsoft Communications Manager Brandon LeBlanc revealed that customers can now reserve their copy of Windows 8 Pro upgrade for $69.99 and start preordering Windows 8 PCs at select retailers. Participating retailers include Amazon, TigerDirect, Best Buy, Staples, Office Depot, Microsoft's retail stores (Pro, Pro Pack), and more. 

Keep in mind that the Windows 8 Pro upgrade also does not include the "Pro Pack", priced at $69.99, which comes with Bit Locker data encryption, the Smart Screen filter for web browsing, VPN connection technology DirectAccess as well as the Media Center extensions, which you will need if you want to play DVDs on your PC.

LeBlanc noted that the packaging for Windows 8 takes a "fresh approach," with five different illustrations available. The new packaging also utilizes paper-based materials to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and fossil fuel consumption while also reducing the packaging weight by 41 percent.

The cues and waiting time in Danish hospitals can sometimes be quite extensive, and you do not have the option of having the doctor of your choice, but you will have to make due with the doctor who gets assigned to your case. If you want something that goes beyond the basics, it is a good idea to sign up for a private insurance in Denmark in order to feel that you are completely covered, and it will also give you the advantage of turning to private clinics and services that may have specialized in one specific field of medicine, and where the waiting period in order to achieve treatment may be significantly shorter compared to a public hospital.

Apprenticeships are all about gaining experience while learning. In fact, the easiest way to land up with a job straight out of college is to have a good experience level that can only be built up through apprenticeship. Obviously there are other advantages to working while studying such as earning money, travelling the world, meeting new contacts in the industry one is about to enter and so on but the number one reason someone should take up such a junior job is to gather technical knowledge of the industry they are about to enter. 

The year 2012 has been characterized by economic turmoil and severe job cuts. In such a scenario, graduates and postgraduates have been left to fend for themselves making it tougher for students to find willing employers who shall give them an apprenticeship.

Nevertheless, there are five fields or work that one can easily get an apprenticeship in. They are engineering, retail marketing, pharmaceuticals, the health sector and public services. These five fields seem to be the least affected throughout the recession of 2007 to 2012. 

Engineering

The potential to earn high even while being an intern is great with engineering programs. Companies, in fact, take up engineering graduates early on through internship programs as it saves them a lot of money spent through recruitment drives.

Moreover, current economic clouds do not allow companies to invest into recruitment. Students in core fields of engineering such as mechanical, electronics and electrical should find it getting an apprenticeship easy and lucrative as the job prospects for these fields shall always be good no matter what the economic situation is like.

Retail Marketing 

If there is any sector that never takes a big loss, it is the retail sector. Manpower is always required for marketing and retail chain businesses hence making it an ideal sector to enter during a recession. Students can gain experience managing retail stores, warehouses etc. while they study and come out with their degree to become managers and administrators.

Pharmaceuticals

Medicine business shall always be a booming business. Just as beauty products shall never go out of demand, medicines are always high on the want list of people. Pharmaceutical companies usually do not give out apprenticeship programs openly so students pursuing a pharmaceutical course should try to make contact with HR departments of large or small companies in an effort to land up a position with them. 

Health Sector 

Being a doctor, paramedic or a nurse is the best thing to survive recession. People who enter the health sector are never out of jobs. Even the current 2012 trends speak for the health sector. With nearly 12.4 million unemployed in the US and 24.7 million unemployed in Europe, the figures for unemployment in the health sector are minute.

This profession is probably the best to search for an apprenticeship in. 

Public Services

Increasing economic turmoil does provide an opportunity for public service students to flex their muscles. With more government agencies finding it difficult to handle increasing demands of the unemployed, the government is more than willing to hire anyone and everyone.
