Onstage at TEDGlobal, Péter Fankhauser demonstrates Rezero, a robot that balances on a ball though the ball needs to keep moving to stand up, it can move very dynamically with the single point of contact to the ground.
Designed and built by a group of engineering students, Rezero is the first ballbot made to move quickly and gracefully -- and even dance. I'm trying to remember the Sci-Fi movie I saw that had something like this... though I think it was a single wheel instead of a ball on the bottom. Fun stuff :-)
The creators note that at present it's just an experiment but imagine it might be used as a "tour guide" in exhibitions or parks, or used in hospitals to carry around equipment. Looking forward to see if this gets adapted and used anywhere beyond this experiment.
Amazing right? Let us know what you think.
