Books and movies throughout the years have predicted an endless number of different ways humanity could meet its end. Though many of these theories have little plausibility, there is a kernel of truth in some of them. Unlike in movies or books, it is not likely that any hero could save humanity from destruction if these events occurred in the real world.
Pandemics have happened before and could strike again. The bubonic plague and the 1918 Spanish flu are examples of catastrophic human health disasters. Some pandemics, however, can be avoided or treated with a cure. Other global disasters could cause such unavoidable destruction that humanity would potentially end. A massive volcano eruption is one possible example. Such an eruption would have the potential to block out the sun with a huge cloud of ash and dust.
