Things are definitely getting more and more high tech these days, and here we are with the Holoflector interactive augmented reality mirror which is the result of the good people at Microsoft Research tinkering around with a Kinect, a Windows Phone handset as well as a bunch of ideas. 

 

 

This special interactive augmented-reality mirror will see graphics superimposed in the right manner on your own reflection that paves the way for a novel augmented-reality experience. The Holoflector will merge the abilities of Kinect and Windows Phone in order to know just where your handset is, and go ahead by rendering graphics that seeming hover above it.

Microsoft Research : Illumishare

Seen first at Microsoft TechForum 2012, IllumiShare enables remote people to share any physical or digital object on any surface. It is a low-cost, peripheral device that looks like a desk lamp, and just like a lamp lights up a surface at which it is pointed, IllumiShare shares a surface. 

To do this, IllumiShare uses a camera-projector pair where the camera captures video of the local workspace and sends it to the remote space and the projector projects video of the remote workspace onto the local space. 

With IllumiShare, people can sketch together using real ink and paper, remote meeting attendees can interact with conference room whiteboards, and children can have remote play dates in which they play with real toys.

Microsoft Research : Interactive Displays - Applied Sciences Group (ASG) explores a see through 3D desktop

Presented at Microsoft TechForum 2012 : In the first of two demonstrations given at TechForum by the Applied Sciences Team, this is a project that is looking at what’s possible with a Samsung transparent OLED screen, Kinect sensors and some software magic. 

What you get is the ability to manipulate objects that lie behind the transparent screen - as well as objects on the screen with something called “view-dependent, depth-corrected gaze”.

After spending any time with Stevie Bathiche and his team you get used to such terminology. Much of the team's work explores the use of Kinect for tracking your eyes and delivering an image back to them that tracks your movements and gives depth and perspective.

The effect in this demo is you have a digital desktop that has depth allowing you to virtually place objects in space behind the screen, while also enabling the manipulation of objects on the screen from behind.

As with many of these types of demos, the video does a far better job of showing you what is going on than my words can. It’s another example of how the boundaries between physical and digital worlds are blurring.
