NHK and Panasonic announced a 145-inch Ultra High Definition Plasma Display with 34 million pixels

Description :
NHK has announced a 145-inch Ultra High Definition plasma display, with 16 times the resolution of a regular Full HD display. This follows the 85-inch LCD display announced by NHK last year (Source DigInfoTV).

This prototype was co-developed with Panasonic. It has almost 34 million 0.417 mm square pixels, 7,860 horizontally and 4,320 vertically, and a frame rate of 60 fps.

This display uses a new drive system to stabilize the picture throughout the panel, by scanning several pixels simultaneously in the vertical direction. Even in a panel with about 4,000 scan lines, this achieves a stable picture without flickering.

"Even when viewed from 1.6 m away, this Ultra High Definition display makes you feel as if you're looking at a real scene. It doesn't use 3D technology, but the picture is so realistic, you feel truly immersed in the scene."

This is the world's first Ultra High Definition plasma display. As the pixels of a plasma display are self-emitting and the display therefore doesn't require a backlight, it has superior viewing angles, responsiveness and color reproduction.

"One major feature of this 145-inch Ultra High Definition display is that it gives a very even image at such a high resolution. Another big feature is, because it's Ultra High Definition, it efficiently shows 8K x 4K pictures, which have a huge pixel count."

"At present, we think this system will be used in commercial settings first, such as theaters, rather than in the home."

This new plasma display will be on show to the public from May 24-27, at NHK's Science & Technology Research Laboratories in Tokyo.

Motorola DROID RAZR MAXX : Video Playback and GPS Navigation Test

Description :

Motorola DROID RAZR MAXX is a slightly thicker twin of the DROID RAZR, coming with a larger battery to boost its battery life. All other specifications remain the same. It's fast processor pushes the phone's Android OS with speed and agility. Paired with a connection to Verizon's 4G LTE data, this phone really flies!

For someone like me who owns a real camera for when the photography urge strikes, I'd run, not walk, to the DROID RAZR MAXX, since its combination of speed, longevity, and killer design is awe-inspiring.

But the real reason to buy the RAZR MAXX is actually its massive mammoth 3300mAh battery, which is unfortunately not user-removable. Specifically, you'll be able to stream YouTube video for up to 13 hours, or enjoy GPS navigation for 8 hours. Two words: holy smokes. That's right -- we found ourselves in awe, wondering where this phone had been our whole lives.

Watch as the DROID RAZR MAXX demolishes the competition in a battery drain Video Playback and GPS Navigation test.

Video Playback Test :

GPS Navigation Test :

Our hats go off to Motorola - the RAZR MAXX offers endurance that competing smartphones can only dream of. Power users who need to have the longest lifetime possible will have no choice but to pick it. How long will it be before some phone dethrones the Motorola RAZR MAXX?

Science Nation : New Software Matches More Kidney Donations, Faster

Description :

"Harvard economist Alvin Roth is a matchmaker but he's not finding love - he's finding kidneys!

With support from the National Science Foundation, he and his team have developed a suite of computer programs that match living kidney donors with recipients.

So, the person who needs a kidney brings someone to the table who is willing to donate a kidney.

Even if those two are not a match, the donor will match someone else. Think of it as a medical version of match-dot-com, linking donors and recipients, making chains of transplants possible across the country.

Roth's team includes market designer Itai Ashlagi and operations researcher David Gamarnik at MIT and economists Utku Unver and Tayfun Sonmez at Boston College

So what are economists doing organizing kidney transplants?

It turns out that an understanding of game theory and market dynamics is key to optimizing pairings. It's all about streamlining complicated matches using the science of the marketplace.

Their matching software is the engine that has helped transplant centers in 30 states so far. Check out the video!
