Microsoft News : Download now Visual Studio 11 Beta and .NET Framework 4.5 Beta

Description :

Microsoft has released the Visual Studio 11 Beta with .NET 4.5 Beta for download.

What’s new in the Visual Studio 11 Beta?

Plenty. One of the more significant changes that the Internet has been arguing about lately is the decision to suck away all of the color from the UI in order to increase focus on code. While the new monochromatic approach (that’s present in terms of both UI colors and iconography, which has also been simplified) is cleaner, it is quite bland and depressing. Surely they could have added some additional color to the mix without taking away from the focus on the code.

Beyond this user interface aesthetic change, they also introduced a variety of features and user experience improvements to help boost productivity while developing. Here’s a quick rundown of the main improvements :

Hubs :

To improve the method of navigating through code, Visual Studio now has new versions of the Solution and Team Explorers. In the Solution Explorer hub, various tool windows – Class View, Object Browser, Call Hierarchy, Navigate To, and Fine References – were integrated into one explorer. Something similar was done with the Team Explorer.

Pivots :

Following up on the aforementioned new "Hubs" feature, you are now able to switch the relationship or pivot without switching to another tool window.

Multi-Instancing :

Multiple instances of the Solution Explorer can now be created, with each instance displaying something different/unique about the content at hand. So say, while browsing through code, a developer can duplicate the current instance of the Solution Explorer to maintain that active view.

Preview Tab :

The new preview tab works to minimize the amount of windows created while working on a project; basically, every time a developer does something that would trigger a file to be opened as a "side effect", the file will be opened in the preview tab. You’ll be able to do anything to a file while it is inside of a preview tab, such as edit the content, or convert the tab into a "regular" tab by clicking a button, double-clicking on the file, or dragging the tab.

For a complete and detailed rundown, there are two posts on the Visual Studio MSDN blog that delve into the changes and new features, and provide an in-depth overview of how they work.

You may download the new Visual Studio 11 Beta through Microsoft here.

.NET Framework 4.5 Beta :

Now with .NET Framework 4.5, Microsoft .NET has been enhanced significantly to enable developers to be as productive as possible while building rich, reliable and high-performance software in managed code.

Following are some major improvements in .NET Framework 4.5 :

Languages :

To help developers deliver responsive clients and scalable servers, the C# and Visual Basic languages now have built-in support for writing asynchronous code almost as easily as if it were synchronous. And to help developers tackle data-complex problems, F# integrates Type Providers to make data access trivial in F# programs and components.

Performance :

The Common Language Runtime has been overhauled to provide better performance, in particular for server applications and services. With additions such as background server garbage collection, multicore background JIT compilation and profile-guided optimization, managed applications can now start faster and run with better throughput and lower latency.

Networking :

With the proliferation of devices and continuous services in the cloud, .NET Framework 4.5 builds upon the high-quality networking libraries already available in .NET to further enable the development of increasingly connected applications. New support spans from modern HTTP libraries to WebSockets to support for contract-first service development.

Beyond such areas, many additions have gone into improving the .NET Framework end to end. There are improvements from regular expression processing to better support for compression standards, enhanced support for HTML5, developer productivity enhancements in Entity Framework, optimized mobile experiences through ASP.NET, and more, ensuring .NET Framework 4.5 has something new for all developers building for the client and the cloud.

Microsoft Windows 8 Consumer Preview (Public Beta) Released. Download Now!

Description :

Here's what we know so far...

It's not been a long time when Microsoft released a free Developer Preview build of its upcoming OS "Windows 8" to public. We all were pretty much excited to give it a test drive. Some of us liked it but some of us got disappointed with it. There are many things which have been changed or added in Windows 8 such as new "Start Screen" which has replaced the good old Start Menu in Windows 8, Microsoft Office 2010 like Ribbon UI in Windows Explorer and many other things.

Microsoft Windows 8 Consumer Preview (Public Beta) Released. Download Now!

Today Microsoft has released a free Consumer Preview build of Windows 8 to public. You may consider it as a public Beta build, Microsoft has decided to call it as Consumer Preview build.

Since its a Beta build, you should get better performance and lesser bugs compared to the previous Developer Preview build. There are many noticeable changes in this Consumer Preview build such as removal of Start button, a little bit modified Ribbon UI in Windows Explorer, new login screen, better Start Screen, etc.

Microsoft Windows 8 Consumer Preview (Public Beta) Released. Download Now!

Interested people can download Windows 8 Consumer Preview (Beta) build using the following download link:

Download Windows 8 Consumer Preview (Public Beta)

Windows 8 Consumer Preview Setup will check to see if your PC can run Windows 8 Consumer Preview and select the right download. Setup also features a compatibility report and upgrade assistance. Built-in tools for creating an ISO or bootable flash drive are available for some previous versions of Windows (excluding Windows XP and earlier).
So, what’s new in the build?

Some of the more noteworthy improvements include OS-wide spell check (this is huge, it’s a feature that has been requested by a lot of people for years), the replacement of the Start button with what is called a "Start preview thumbnail" – which displays a preview of the start screen on top of an interface that allows you to cycle through all of your open apps – and the introduction of "Flyout" notifications.

One thing that I found to be quite humorous is that Microsoft actually added a feature called "boot forward"; see, due to the vastly improved boot times in Windows 8, it would be tough or impossible to pull up a boot options menu (i.e by pressing F8). They actually had to implement a feature that lets you set boot options prior to restarting.

It would appear that Microsoft finally hired a plumber to solve their constant leak issues as, surprisingly, there have been no Windows 8 build leaks during the interim period from September to now (of roughly five months).

Also, little information has unofficially trickled out since; much of what we learned about the OS during that period is thanks to the notoriously long Building Windows 8 blog posts by Steven Sinofsky.

Microsoft Windows 8: Remote Desktop Client and Metro Apps

Description :

We've been talking quite a bit about Windows apps delivered to tablets over the past few weeks. As you know by now, one of the new features of the upcoming Windows 8 is the support for "metro style" which are touch-based apps which will be available from a Microsoft app store.

Microsoft Windows 8: Remote Desktop Client and Metro Apps

Metro style apps are interesting because regular (classic?) Windows apps are NOT touch-based at all, instead requiring a keyboard and mouse. In scenarios where a user accesses regular Windows apps from a tablet (via VDI, TS, GoToMyPC, etc.), the user experience is pretty poor because there's an on-screen keyboard and a lot of pinching and zooming to get the interface to work right.

So these new Windows 8 metro-style apps will change that since they're designed for tablets

Unfortunately we now believe that tablets running Windows 8 will be in the $700-800 price range, so they're not going to be too mainstream. And considering that Apple sold over 15m iPads last quarter alone, it's a forgone conclusion that most of the tablets used to connect to Windows 8 environments will NOT be Windows-based tablets.

And that leads us to the main question of the day: What will the remote experience be like for metro style apps running on remote Windows 8 hosts?

Details About Microsoft's Own Metro Style Remote Desktop Connection Client:

Microsoft actually shared quite a few details about the remote desktop experience in Windows 8 at their build conference this past September, specifically :

The main keynote video contains a metro style remote desktop demo at 1:41:00.
A breakout session called "What's new in remote desktop?" has a more detailed metro remoting demo.

Here's What We Know So Far:

First, Microsoft is building a metro style version of the remote desktop connection software. So there will be two versions in Windows 8 - the existing mstsc.exe that works with the classic keyboard and mouse interface, and the new metro style one that's based on touch. Here are 2 screenshots of the connection screen for the metro style remote desktop client.

It's important to note that this is just the CLIENT software that you would use if your client is a touch based metro style client. You can still use this metro style client to run non-metro (classic) Windows apps though.

One cool thing is that the metro style remote desktop client WILL remote multitouch gestures to the remote host, including the touch pressure. This is not "mouse to touch" conversion or anything - this is real touch remoting.

This new client also has the ability to connect to remote metro style apps. So if you're using a Windows 8 tablet and you make a remote connection to a Windows 8 host running the metro style version of Internet Explorer, then YES, you can use IE with all your fingers and it will seem just like a local metro style application that was running on your tablet. (Assuming you had the bandwidth for a good experience, etc.)

What About Connecting to Remote Metro Apps from iPads, Android, etc.?

Microsoft's own metro style remote desktop client looks cool. The only downside is that it's a Windows 8 metro style app itself. (And there's an ironic catch-22 here : If your tablet is powerful to run Windows 8 metro, then you don't need to connect to remote metro apps--you can just run them locally on your tablet.

The real sweet spot for "metro remoting" is going to be to non-Windows 8 tablets, like the iPad and Android. Recall that in the current remote desktop world, Microsoft only really focuses on making an RDP client for Windows (well, and a really crashy Mac one). So we can assume that the same will be true moving forward. I would think that there's a huge opportunity for someone else to build a metro-aware remote desktop client for the iPad and Android. (Is that a job for Citrix? Maybe, but it could also be a simple PocketCloud-like standalone app.)

Regardless of who builds it, I think that we can all agree that yes, tablets (of all kinds) will have remote access to Windows 8 metro style apps. This is a good thing, as deploying Windows apps in the datacenter has a lot of advantages which would also apply to metro apps. (The biggest downside in the past was just that the traditional keyboard-based Windows UI was not fun when delivered to a tablet.

But remoting metro style apps will fix that, which is great.

We'll look forward to the Windows 8 Beta, which is due out next month.

Stay tuned! 💓
