Vouchers

Some game stores have this wonderful little tool where you can buy vouchers instead of games. Just take the vouchers home and give them to your kids. It puts the responsibility of buying their games firmly on their shoulders. It’s perfect if you don’t mind not giving them something to unwrap.

Vouchers don’t work as well in an online game shop, though, so you’ll have to think of something else for them.

Look at the Collection

Perform some reconnaissance work on your gamer. When they’re happily ploughing through enemies on the PC, see what games they’re playing. Look at what they’re playing regularly. Now you have a starting point to begin research.

Type the name of the game into Google and see if there are any upcoming sequels of this game. It’s easy to buy them the upcoming release because they already like the other installments so it’s likely they’ll enjoy this one just as much.

If you’re feeling brave, you can also buy a similar game. If they enjoy Call of Duty, they might enjoy playing Battlefield, and vice-versa.

Age Rating System

The age rating system for games is similar to the one used for films. Don’t stick to it rigidly. The chances are they’ve already played a game which is supposedly too old for them. Take it into account and use the Internet to investigate the content for yourself. Only you can determine what’s suitable.

Children have different levels of maturity. Dealing with guns and killing might be unsuitable for some, whereas other children are more mature than their years. Compare the content with your values and perceptions.

Just use the age rating as a general marker for your buying decisions.

What Advancements in Cloud Computing Mean for Productivity and Accessibility in the Office

The basic Idea behind cloud computing has been around since the late 1950's, when the first very expensive large mainframe computers were designed for simultaneous accessibility through multiple terminals at universities and research institutions due to the immense cost and scarcity of computer time.

This basic pattern existed until well into the 1990's before the brilliant idea of commercially developing the same basic computing structure was developed by large internet companies like Amazon and Oracle; these first large commercial cloud networks came online in early 2000 - 2001 and since then the industry has at first slowly and now very quickly expanded dramatically.

By its most basic definition (for those of you that are still a bit unsure what I mean by "cloud") a cloud computing structure is essentially a large centrally managed system of servers that make up a single large (or vast) computing system and can be filled with hardware, software, or other digital applications such as storage space and security software. This server domain, or cloud, is then accessible through dozens, hundreds, or even millions of remote terminals around the world that have been granted entry rights. Each smaller computer can then use the clouds resources through its remote connection while logged into the server system.

Today this basic structure has evolved to encompass all our personal and business machines: Laptops, PCs smart phones, tablets and even large industrial computers; all connected to an assortment of cloud networks offering dozens of different services and support systems.

There are essentially three main kinds of cloud computing networks: Public Clouds (publicly accessible), Private Clouds (closed cloud networks) and Hybrid clouds (containing both publically open sections and areas that are restricted), which are a mix of the first two. Any of these three can be used to deliver computer power, technology and software as a service, usually under one or more of the following categories:

- security as a service

- software as a service

- storage as a service

- hardware as a service

- Data as a service

- Online Test environment/API as a service

As you can see from the list and image above, all of these powerful features and numerous others are offered as services. This is in fact the essential benefit of cloud networks; powerful broadband connections have allowed for what were formerly products to be turned into remotely delivered services in which the actual service delivery structure is located away from a single personal or business computer. Also, bear in mind that the above is only a partial list of cloud services and many cloud networks offer far more customer options that are now evolving on a daily basis!

Okay, so let's take a look at the chief productivity and accessibility benefits of this new cloud landscape for your business:

1. Low Priced Access to Major Computer Power

Since most commercial cloud networks are run by major corporations --such as Microsoft, Amazon, Apple, Oracle and Google -- with heavy software and hardware resources at their disposal, buying into a cloud network gives your business access to extremely powerful computer tools at a tiny fraction of the cost of buying them yourself. For a single monthly/annual membership fee, even individuals and very small businesses can take advantage of resources that were strictly the domain of large corporations just 20 years ago or less.

From security systems to API environments to design software applications, your business can handle much larger workloads through cloud computing and do so without having to concern itself with the costs of trying to maintain the infrastructure that allows these capabilities.

2. Decentralization of the Workplace

As mentioned above, one of the chief features of cloud computing systems is their accessibility via remote devices such as smart phones, tablets, laptops and computers from anywhere in the world with access to the same network on which a given cloud database is located. Because of this, workplaces such as your business can be massively decentralized for greater efficiency and cheaper operational costs.

Previously, you as a business would have had to keep all of your hardware or software onsite and have your employees come into a physical office so they could make use of it. Now, this is becoming steadily less necessary; when the very business resources you use are themselves remotely accessible, your entire team of contractors, developers or other workers can access them from their own home computers or mobile devices just as easily as they can from an office. You and your employees can also share your information more effectively, even in large quantities, through the data and storage options that many cloud computing systems provide.

The obvious conclusion here is that you may just be able to shift from an office based workforce to a team of telecommuting employees that enter the cloud network to which you have bought access and complete their work from home, working on a more flexible and efficient schedule without wasting time on travel.

3. Dramatically Increased Work Flexibility and Productivity

As a result of the greater resource access and decentralization induced flexibility that cloud computing can give to your business, you can now also count on creating a much more flexible workplace in which you can give your clients access to more varied, more professional services at discounted prices. Since the business tools you use are maintained, updated and expanded by the cloud provider instead of you, your company can focus more purely on client-end satisfaction and operations.

Your costs and time outlays for doing business are also reduced by the fact that your employees no longer necessarily need to travel and can work from wherever they are at a much more flexible time schedule; again, the result of this is also a reduction in time wasting and more focus on work instead of external tasks like commuting and running a large office setting. On the whole, your business becomes more adaptive, faster and cheaper to run.

The ultimate net result of all of these features that come with working from different clouds is a more competitive company that can give better service at reduced costs. Michel Pahud walks through some in-place command work done at Microsoft Research including pen and touch with toolglass bimanual techniques. In-place commands are menus that appear next to the finger. 

They can work on small displays like slate, but also on very large displays so the user doesn't have to reach for the menu.

Microsoft Research : Predicting and Understanding the 2012 Election

For more than 75 years, elections forecasting has been static - ask a random sample of a representative group of voters who they would vote for if the election were held today, and then report the poll result. 

In this talk, David Rothschild first demonstrates that the same samples could be addressed with other questions to produce a more accurate standard forecast (such as binary winner or expected vote share). Second, he challenges the standard forecast, stating that what most stakeholders really want and need are more innovative forecasts, like probability of victory or even probability distributions.

Third, David shows how both standard and innovative forecasts can be made more efficient with new methods that utilize more cost-effective, non-representative samples and, in time, passively generated social media data. Fourth, he shows how Microsoft is going to be a leader in this new innovation. Finally, David tells you know who is going to win the election!

Microsoft Research : KinÊtre at SIGGRAPH 2012 - A Novel Way To Bring Computer Animations To Life

Imagine you are asked to produce a 3D animation of a demonic armchair terrorizing an innocent desk lamp. You may think about model rigging, skeleton deformation, and keyframing.   

Depending on your experience, you might imagine hours to days at the controls of Maya or Blender. But even if you have absolutely no computer Graphics experience, it can be so much easier : grab a nearby chair and desk lamp, scan them using a consumer depth camera, and use the same camera to track your body, aligning your virtual limbs to the chair’s geometry. 

At one spoken command, your limbs are attached to the chair model, which follows your movements in an intuitive and natural manner. 

KinÊtre is such a system. A research project from Microsoft Research Cambridge that allows novice users to scan physical objects and bring them to life in seconds by using their own bodies to animate them. 

Rather than targeting professional animators, it brings animation to a new audience of users with little or no CG experience. It allows realistic deformations of arbitrary static meshes, runs in real time on consumer hardware, and uses the human body for input in conjunction with simple voice commands. 

KinÊtre lets anyone create playful 3D animations.This system has a multitude of potential uses for interactive storytelling, physical gaming, or more immersive communications.

The answer is yes and here is how : Twisted Nematic (TN) is the most widely used LCD technology today, especially on laptop screens. Some color combinations may become indistinguishable when viewed at a certain angle. Exploiting this, we can hide and show information at different angles without special hardware. 

Two completely different images can be shown at different viewing angles by spatial multiplexing or by temporal multiplexing. This method works across various TN-based LCD screens. Similarly, two movies or video games can be played simultaneously for different viewing angles, allowing people to watch different programs or play video games with personalized views.

Facial Motion Capture is the process of electronically converting the movements of a person's face into a digital database using cameras or laser scanners. This database may then be used to produce CG (computer graphics) computer animation for movies, games, or real-time avatars. 

Because the motion of CG characters is derived from the movements of real people, it results in more realistic and nuanced computer character animation than if the animation were created manually. 

Digital video-based methods are becoming increasingly preferred, as mechanical systems tend to be cumbersome and difficult to use. Several commercial companies are developing already products that have been used, but are rather expensive. 

Microsoft introduced this new technology at TechFest 2012. High-Fidelity Facial-Animation Capturing presented a new approach for acquiring high-fidelity, 3-D facial performances with realistic dynamic wrinkles and finely scaled facial details. This approach leverages state-of-the-art motion-capture technology and advanced 3-D scanning technology for facial-performance acquisition. 

The facial animations thus harvested, find their use, in Movies, games, social networking Avatars etc. Hopefully this tech goes with the next generation of consoles. Take a look...

It is expected that this will become a major input device for computer games once the software is available in an affordable format, but the hardware and software do not yet exist, despite the research for the last 15 years producing results that are almost usable.

Microsoft Research : Beamatron Augmented Reality Concept via Kinect

Beamatron is a new, augmented-reality concept that combines a projector and a Kinect camera on a pan-tilt moving head. The moving head is used to place the projected image almost anywhere in a room. Meanwhile, the depth camera enables the correct warping of the displayed image for the shape of the projection surface and for the projected graphics to react in physically appropriate ways. 

 

 

For example, a projected virtual car can be driven on the floor of the room but will bump into obstacles or run over ramps. As another application, we consider the ability to bring notifications and other graphics to the attention of the user by automatically placing the graphics within the user's view.
