Three Ways Tablet Devices Are Changing Healthcare

Since mobile tablet devices were introduced, they have grown in popularity and been used as an innovative tool in businesses, school settings and even law enforcement and government agencies. Tablets are becoming mainstream in the healthcare field as well, as it gives doctors and nurses a gateway to efficiency and portability. 

Tablet devices are changing the medical industry in several ways. Fierce Mobile Healthcare released a report in 2012 stating that more than 60 percent of doctors now use tablet devices while performing their everyday duties.

Improved Patient Interaction

A tablet device can improve the way doctors and nurses interact with their patients, whether it's demonstrating a procedure to them or showing them an interactive diagram. Doctors can use tablets to show graphs, illustrations, animations and more on a screen to explain a diagnosis or give the patient a look at an x-ray. Videos, animations and other interactive graphics are on the rise with advances in technology, creating a visually appealing supplement to consultations and exams with patients. Discussing symptoms and logging them onto their wireless tablet while in the presence of their patient can make it easier to find a difficult diagnosis.

Nurses can use the tablets to record information, such as vitals, allergies to certain medications or certain symptoms before the patient is seen by a doctor. They can also refill prescriptions on the spot while in the presence of their patient to ensure they're choosing the correct pharmacy. If they need to schedule a follow-up appointment or update which prescription medications they're taking, they can do it in the presence of the patient to prevent any miscommunication or confusion.

Prescription Medications

Doctors can use the tablets to research medications on the go. By nurses recording patients' allergies to specific medications electronically, the doctor will be able to access information about the most effective and affordable drugs to patients. If they're in the middle of diagnosing a patient and prescribing medication to them, but need to check if it's covered by insurance or explain its side effects to the patients, they don't have to leave the room to do their research on a computer in their office. They can simply look it up on their tablet, or verify their insurance coverage with the patient nearby so each examination or consultation is more interactive and personal, which leaves the patients feeling more comfortable and satisfied with their experience.

Financials

Finally, tablet devices are contributing to healthcare clinics and offices by helping them update internal information easier. Tablets offer better battery life than most laptops and are easier to carry around because they're so lightweight. Doctors can update inventory information, or a list describing the services rendered to a specific patient on a tablet that the receptionists or nurses can access wirelessly. They'll be able to bill insurance providers, order medications, tools and other inventory low in stock and do much more with the improved communication within their clinic. Budget reports, monthly financial expenses and more can be sent to employees or financial partners in an easier way. The ability to send emails and communicate easier reduces the amount of phone calls doctors need to make on a daily basis as well.

Employees working in the healthcare field are constantly on the go, moving from different patient exam rooms to offices and waiting rooms. Having a lightweight tablet device that they can carry around with them and turn on with the press of a button improves the daily functions of a medical facility in several ways, allowing them to work more efficiently and deliver better quality care to their patients and clients.

The 3 Smallest Colleges In The World

The smallest colleges in the world are found mostly in the United States in older areas of the country and in states with smaller populations. Most UK universities are large, with some having populations of upwards of 70,000 students. 

Smaller colleges in the UK usually have around 2,000 students. Most universities there, however, have between 2,000 and 15,000. Colleges in the UK are really more like trade schools, teaching professions like hairdressing and mechanics. Universities are more like traditional colleges in the United States.

Have A Specialized Focus To Find Smaller Colleges In The UK :

There is one university in the UK with a relatively low population of about 150 students, and that is the Courtauld Institute of Art in London. It seems that if one hopes to find a small college in the UK, they will need to have a specific skill set in mind to find that smaller college atmosphere. Most universities have very large populations in all areas of the UK.

Likewise, colleges in Australia and New Zealand have tremendously large populations, with the smallest colleges having populations of about 7,000 students. One can find small classrooms in Australia, especially when you look at a college like Bond University, where the population is about 4,500 and classroom ratio size is around 11:1. Even though it is a larger college, the small classroom size is seen as a huge benefit.

United States Has The Smallest Colleges :

The three smallest colleges in the world are all found in various parts of the United States. The third smallest college is Thomas More College with a student population of about 84 students. Situated on a picturesque 14 acres in Merrimack, New Hampshire, students here experience a unique Roman Catholic education which includes one semester of studying abroad in Italy as part of its core curriculum. The place they study in Italy is fascinating and is only five miles away from the famous landmark, St. Peter's Basilica.

Students who attend Thomas More graduate having had a range of broad life experiences, including things like visiting areas famous for unique baroque and renaissance architecture. The experiences from living in Italy broaden minds and students are exposed to some of the most famous worldwide authors like Cicero and Homer. Students graduate after four years with an amazing amount of worldwide cultural educational experiences that are only available in a few places.

The second smallest college is called Shimer College. It is located near Chicago, Illinois and hopes to attract students interested in literary pursuits. Also known as the "Great Books College" of Chicago, students are immersed in three major topics of study, including social sciences, natural sciences and humanities. With a low population of only about 81, students receive highly personalized attention and focus. They graduate with a very well-rounded educational point of view of the world around them.

Smallest College In The World :

By far, the smallest college in the world is the Alaska Bible College. There are only 38 students attending this Christian school. With a focus primarily on developing young minds wishing to go into Christian ministry in one form or another, this college has been around for 40 years preparing young people for a life focused on ministry.

In your free time when you attend the Alaska Bible College you can have experiences like dog-sledding. With such unique experiences, this is a great place for any young person who wishes to make a difference by going into ministry. If a really small college is desired, this is a great choice.

30 Years of Changes : Teenagers in 1982 and 2012

It seems that every generation has some belief that the one which follows is degenerate. This is hardly a new observation; 3000 years ago, Greek poet Hesiod wrote that all youth "are reckless beyond words" and "impatient of restraint," unlike his own generation, which was taught "to be discrete and respectful of elders."

Are the high school students of 2012 really so different from their counterparts of 30 years ago? In 1982 a kid riding the bus to school might have listened to a Walkman, but today's teens have their music on MP3 players or cell phones. The technology has changed, but the musical purpose remains.

Graduation rates have dropped since 1982, but more students than ever are going on to college. Drug use and cigarette use has dropped considerably, and modern teens are far more likely to use protection during sex. The teenagers of 2012 may be more prepared to face the world than the teens of 1982 were.

Microsoft Research : Predicting and Understanding the 2012 Election

For more than 75 years, elections forecasting has been static - ask a random sample of a representative group of voters who they would vote for if the election were held today, and then report the poll result. 

In this talk, David Rothschild first demonstrates that the same samples could be addressed with other questions to produce a more accurate standard forecast (such as binary winner or expected vote share). Second, he challenges the standard forecast, stating that what most stakeholders really want and need are more innovative forecasts, like probability of victory or even probability distributions.

Third, David shows how both standard and innovative forecasts can be made more efficient with new methods that utilize more cost-effective, non-representative samples and, in time, passively generated social media data. Fourth, he shows how Microsoft is going to be a leader in this new innovation. Finally, David tells you know who is going to win the election!

Microsoft Windows 8 Now Available for Pre Order

Finally we get to see all price options for Microsoft’s next-generation Computer OS - the Windows 8. Microsoft just announced that enthusiastic early adopters can pre-order their copies from major retailers, ensuring that a packaged Windows 8 DVD will have your name on it at launch.

With the launch of Windows 8 rapidly approaching, a new wave of tablets, convertibles, hybrids, Notebooks, Ultrabooks and all-in-one PCs are set to hit the shelves later this month. Microsoft also said PC makers such as ASUS, Acer, Asustek, Dell, HP, Samsung and Sony were also now taking pre-orders for machines with Windows 8 pre-installed. 

Microsoft Communications Manager Brandon LeBlanc revealed that customers can now reserve their copy of Windows 8 Pro upgrade for $69.99 and start preordering Windows 8 PCs at select retailers. Participating retailers include Amazon, TigerDirect, Best Buy, Staples, Office Depot, Microsoft's retail stores (Pro, Pro Pack), and more. 

Keep in mind that the Windows 8 Pro upgrade also does not include the "Pro Pack", priced at $69.99, which comes with Bit Locker data encryption, the Smart Screen filter for web browsing, VPN connection technology DirectAccess as well as the Media Center extensions, which you will need if you want to play DVDs on your PC.

Top 5 Most Common Apprenticeships

Apprenticeships are all about gaining experience while learning. In fact, the easiest way to land up with a job straight out of college is to have a good experience level that can only be built up through apprenticeship. Obviously there are other advantages to working while studying such as earning money, travelling the world, meeting new contacts in the industry one is about to enter and so on but the number one reason someone should take up such a junior job is to gather technical knowledge of the industry they are about to enter. 

The year 2012 has been characterized by economic turmoil and severe job cuts. In such a scenario, graduates and postgraduates have been left to fend for themselves making it tougher for students to find willing employers who shall give them an apprenticeship.

Nevertheless, there are five fields or work that one can easily get an apprenticeship in. They are engineering, retail marketing, pharmaceuticals, the health sector and public services. These five fields seem to be the least affected throughout the recession of 2007 to 2012. 

Engineering

The potential to earn high even while being an intern is great with engineering programs. Companies, in fact, take up engineering graduates early on through internship programs as it saves them a lot of money spent through recruitment drives.

Moreover, current economic clouds do not allow companies to invest into recruitment. Students in core fields of engineering such as mechanical, electronics and electrical should find it getting an apprenticeship easy and lucrative as the job prospects for these fields shall always be good no matter what the economic situation is like.

Retail Marketing 

If there is any sector that never takes a big loss, it is the retail sector. Manpower is always required for marketing and retail chain businesses hence making it an ideal sector to enter during a recession. Students can gain experience managing retail stores, warehouses etc. while they study and come out with their degree to become managers and administrators.

Pharmaceuticals

Medicine business shall always be a booming business. Just as beauty products shall never go out of demand, medicines are always high on the want list of people. Pharmaceutical companies usually do not give out apprenticeship programs openly so students pursuing a pharmaceutical course should try to make contact with HR departments of large or small companies in an effort to land up a position with them. 

Health Sector 

Being a doctor, paramedic or a nurse is the best thing to survive recession. People who enter the health sector are never out of jobs. Even the current 2012 trends speak for the health sector. With nearly 12.4 million unemployed in the US and 24.7 million unemployed in Europe, the figures for unemployment in the health sector are minute.

This profession is probably the best to search for an apprenticeship in. 

Public Services

Increasing economic turmoil does provide an opportunity for public service students to flex their muscles. With more government agencies finding it difficult to handle increasing demands of the unemployed, the government is more than willing to hire anyone and everyone.

In many cases, an individual can remember a certain teacher or professor who had a profound impact on his or her educational experience. In some cases, a single teacher can steer a child from a life of crime towards a life of fulfillment.

Everything that humans enjoy in modern life is a result of education. When one visits a doctor, it's important to remember that all doctors must spend at least 10 years in a school being educated about medicine. This applies for all career fields ranging from engineering to logistics management.

With teaching, there's no limits to one's potential.

Can iPhone 5 Exceed Your Expectations?

The iPhone 5 is thinner, faster, and lighter than its predecessors. 

Seemingly defying common sense, this new iPhone has managed to get larger, lighter, and stronger than ever before. In short, this phone all-overs users to have their cake and eat it too.

What Does the iPhone 5 Bring to the Table?

The iPhone5 is the accumulation of exactly what users have been requesting ever since the release of the prior iPhone, the 4S. Visually speaking the iPhone 5 closely resembles its older generations. The most obvious physical change to this generation of iPhone isn’t a visual difference, but the strikingly lighter design. The iPhone 5 also gained some lateral height, about one third of an inch, while remaining as wide as the last two generations. Part of this extended length helps shifts the device’s weight in a way that makes it seem even lighter than you would expect. This also means more useable touch space as well as a better means of viewing high definition content.

Design Alterations and Improvements?

There are a few subtle design changes. The glass back of prior iPhone generations has been discarded in favor of a more durable aluminium back which also helps prevent the device from being a fingerprint trap. The headphone jack as moved to the bottom of the unit which now shares uniform jack positioning with the design of the iPod. In short, it’s stronger and more intelligently designed with ergonomic and durable use in mind.

The dock connector for this generation has changed to reflect the thinner design of the iPhone 5 and a now offers a less clunky and awkward connector known as the Lightning dock. The Lightning connector is far easier to connect than the old 30 pin design, also facilitating the iPhone 5 to sync data up to 20% faster than older generations.

What About Hardware Improvements?

Speaking of speed, the iPhone 5 uses an A6 processor which Apple has claimed is twice as fast as the previously used A5 processor. This means user apps and games will run smoother, load faster, and be less prone to lag. The storage capacity shares similar improvements, with options ranging from 16 to 64GB of data

In respect to pixel density, contrast, brightness, and resolution, the iPhone 5 improves upon what was already the industry standard: the iPhone 4. The iPhone 5 also now offers complete sRGB display coverage, meaning it can represent every color in the spectrum. The front camera provides a 720p video display accompanied by a massive resolution increase due to the lateral size increase. The camera also supports a brand new panorama mode which allows the user to create a pictures in massive resolutions of over 10,000 x2,500.

Summary:

Not only will the iPhone provide you with industry leading hardware when compared to other Smartphones, the iPhone 5 is also a significant improvement over the prior generation in essentially every respect. The latest iPhone is without a question the greatest iPhone to date, and stands to be a serious competitor when compared to even next generation Smartphones.

TED : Susan Solomon talks about The Promise of Research with Adult Stem Cells

Calling them "our bodies' own repair kits," Susan Solomon advocates research using adult stem cells. We can use them to model and study disease, but she hopes for much more. 

Adult stem cells are undifferentiated cells, found throughout the body after development, that multiply by cell division to replenish dying cells and regenerate damaged tissues. Also known as somatic stem cells, they can be found in juvenile as well as adult animals and human bodies. They are pluripotent because they can morph in to any cells in our bodies.

By growing adult stem cells lines in a lab, Susan's team creates testbeds that could accelerate research into curing disease - and perhaps lead to individualized treatment, targeted not just to a particular disease but a particular person.

Boston Dynamics : Cheetah Robot and a New World Speed Record at 28.3 mph - Faster than Usain Bolt

Cheetah Robot which is powered by a hydraulic pump is a fast-running quadruped developed by Boston Dynamics with funding from DARPA. It just blazed past its previous speed record recorded in February at 18 mph (29 Km/h), getting up to 28.3 mph (45.5 Km/h) - about 0.5 mph faster than Usain Bolt's fastest 20 meter split. 

"This version of the Cheetah Robot has a slight advantage over Bolt as it runs on a treadmill with offboard power." Darpa said in a statement, "but most of the power Cheetah used was to swing and lift its legs fast enough, not to propel iself forward."

The agency plans to test the legged robot in the field early next year. According to Darpa the aim is to "more effectively assist war fighters across a greater range of Defense missions." 

The machine's design has been inspired by the real cheetah, the fastest land animal which can reach speeds of 75 mph (121 Km/h).

"Cheetahs happen to be beautiful examples of how natural Engineering has created speed and agility across rough terrain," said Gill Pratt, Darpa programme manager.

Remembering Neil Armstrong

History will remember Neil Armstrong, foremost, as the first human to step foot on another heavenly body. But his NASA family and many admirers worldwide will forever appreciate him for more than just that one, albeit world-changing, accomplishment. 

Neil A. Armstrong was born in Wapakoneta, Ohio, on August 5, 1930. He began his NASA career in Ohio.

After serving as a naval aviator from 1949 to 1952, Armstrong joined the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (NACA) in 1955. His first assignment was with the NACA Lewis Research Center (now NASA Glenn) in Cleveland. Over the next 17 years, he was an engineer, test pilot, astronaut and administrator for NACA and its successor agency, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA).

As a research pilot at NASA's Flight Research Center, Edwards, Calif., he was a project pilot on many pioneering high speed aircraft, including the well known, 4000-mph X-15. He has flown over 200 different models of aircraft, including jets, rockets, helicopters and gliders.

Armstrong transferred to astronaut status in 1962. He was assigned as command pilot for the Gemini 8 mission. Gemini 8 was launched on March 16, 1966, and Armstrong performed the first successful docking of two vehicles in space.

As spacecraft commander for Apollo 11, the first manned lunar landing mission, Armstrong gained the distinction of being the first man to land a craft on the moon and first to step on its surface.

Armstrong subsequently held the position of Deputy Associate Administrator for Aeronautics, NASA Headquarters, Washington, D.C. In this position, he was responsible for the coordination and management of overall NASA research and technology work related to aeronautics.

He was Professor of Aerospace Engineering at the University of Cincinnati between 1971-1979. During the years 1982-1992, Armstrong was chairman of Computing Technologies for Aviation, Inc., Charlottesville, Va.

He received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Aeronautical Engineering from Purdue University and a Master of Science in Aerospace Engineering from the University of Southern California. He holds honorary doctorates from a number of universities.

Armstrong was a Fellow of the Society of Experimental Test Pilots and the Royal Aeronautical Society; Honorary Fellow of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics, and the International Astronautics Federation.

He was a member of the National Academy of Engineering and the Academy of the Kingdom of Morocco. He served as a member of the National Commission on Space (1985-1986), as Vice-Chairman of the Presidential Commission on the Space Shuttle Challenger Accident (1986), and as Chairman of the Presidential Advisory Committee for the Peace Corps (1971-1973).

Armstrong was decorated by 17 countries. He was the recipient of many special honors, including the Presidential Medal of Freedom; the Congressional Gold Medal; the Congressional Space Medal of Honor; the Explorers Club Medal; the Robert H. Goddard Memorial Trophy; the NASA Distinguished Service Medal; the Harmon International Aviation Trophy; the Royal Geographic Society's Gold Medal; the Federation Aeronautique Internationale's Gold Space Medal; the American Astronautical Society Flight Achievement Award; the Robert J. Collier Trophy; the AIAA Astronautics Award; the Octave Chanute Award; and the John J. Montgomery Award.

Armstrong passed away on Aug. 25, 2012 following complications resulting from cardiovascular procedures. He was 82. August 2012

For someone involved in one of the most famous events in world history Armstrong was a very private person. He kept to himself as much as he could. But after he died, his family put out a statement which said : "When you see the moon smiling down on you, look up and think of Neil Armstrong and give him a wink."
A public memorial service for Armstrong is being planned for early September in Washington, DC.

The U.S. Apple Store Went Down - Here we go

The U.S. Apple Store is currently down which could signal that new Apple products are about to be launched. Unlike previous times it's gone down though, there is no note announcing that the store is down - just that the browser can't reach the store. 

The sign on the Store says : “We’re busy updating the Apple Store for you and will be back soon.”

It’s possible that Apple is simply fixing some technical glitches.

Whatever the reason is, it'll be a few short hours until we know more details. Once it gets back up, we will let you know about the changes.

UPDATE : Apple Store is online again.
