Here Is the Software That Can Save Your Business in a Pinch

Description :

While the giant, hydra-headed monster known as business moves slowly, the actual work of business happens fast, extremely fast. Just ask BlackBerry: a company that ruled the smartphone roost in the beginning. They thought they had a long time to sit on their lead. They never saw Apple coming. The iPhone struck so fast that even once it got here, they didn’t really see it. Now, they’re dead.

Here Is the Software That Can Save Your Business in a Pinch

BlackBerry (known at the time as RIM) could have used a bit of help with technology that could have saved them in a pinch. And they are not the only cautionary tale from which we can learn. From the outside, business moves at a glacial pace. From the inside, it moves at the speed of light.

While most businesses will never have to face what RIM did, there comes a time when every business is confronted with a situation that might have left them paralyzed were it not for recent technological developments. Here is a handful that just might help your business in a pinch:

A Custom Event App

Doing a corporate event the old-fashioned way is just flushing money down the old-fashioned corporate toilet. If you find yourself responsible for making event arrangements, you probably know how important it is to have a branded, custom-made app. What you may not realize is how few people inside your company could actually pull that off.

You will find companies like Cvent exist to make custom app development possible for those businesses without the internal resources to manage it for themselves. There are lots of moving parts to getting the most out of your corporate event. For starters, an event app gives you higher engagement from the participants, and better analytics to track the effectiveness of your corporate spend.

Corporate events are some of the best corporate dollars you can spend, but only if you do it right. Doing it right means providing what most companies can’t: a custom app for a more immersive and productive experience. You don’t want to wait until the last minute to commission your app. But it is great to know that it is there for the save when you need it.

Relocating

The same tech that helps consumers move on short notice can be leveraged for companies when they have to relocate. When moving a business, a thousand things can go wrong. There are small things like finding the packing supplies you need at a reasonable price, to the big things like having to find a different moving company at the last minute.

Setting up the office at the new location is also a part of the moving adventure. There will be special cables that are lost or damaged. You won’t be able to start your servers without them. And you can’t get them from your local retailer. How many days can you afford to go without restarting your server?

Between local search on mobile, and 24/7/365 online retailers that can get you any conceivable part the next business day, businesses are saved on a daily basis.

Document Markup and Signing Apps

The fax machine was really great at one thing: Receiving a document that you could fill out, sign, and send back. The last thing you wanted to do was depend on mail and parcel services to move documents from one place to the other. If you didn’t have access to a fax on both ends of the deal, you would likely lose the deal. That is probably the main impetus for courier services.

Today, neither fax nor couriers are necessary for those tasks. We can just use sign and markup apps to scan documents, fill them out, include a real signature, and send them on their way. It takes longer to sign a document than it does to send it anywhere in the world.

Sometimes moving at the speed of business means crawling at a snails pace. And other times, it means zipping along at light speed. When it’s the latter, don’t get left behind. Use custom event apps, apps to help with relocation, and document signing apps. The next time your small business is in a pinch, just remember, there’s an app for that.

Would love to hear from you in the comments!

Making BYOD Work For Your Company

Description :

Many businesses are getting in tune with the digital age, and one of the ways they are doing it is by adopting a bring your own device (BYOD) policy for employees.

It is a process that has been somewhat slow to be fully adopted by businesses for a few reasons. First, many employers are hesitant to let their employees store private company documents on their own devices for fear that the privacy is compromised. Also, if certain business applications and log ins are used on the employee devices, and the employee leaves to go work for a rival company, they can still view and log in to those applications.

Making BYOD Work For Your Company

Through mobile device management (MDM), your business can take the necessary steps in making sure that it will not get burned by instituting a BYOD policy. In fact, the two go hand in hand. In order to execute a safe BYOD policy, companies also need to employ an MDM strategy. Mobile communication companies like BlackBerry have been offering MDM solutions for several years. As the BYOD and MDM trend continue to gain interest, services are becoming even more readily available.

Since BYOD policies are gaining much attention, companies are starting to realize the importance of some of the benefits, such as saving money on hardware, reserving IT resources and creating employee satisfaction. Companies still have to be careful when implementing a BYOD policy because no two companies are identical, so your approach should be tailored.

Here are a few management best practices to help make BYOD work for your company:

It is important, first and foremost, to have your employees agree to all levels of a BYOD policy, and do it in writing. This will help all parties maintain a smooth working relationship within the BYOD policy.

The policy should be clear on what happens if the device is lost or stolen. Companies have the capability to wipe out all of the data associated with their private documents to prevent unauthorized access.

Business documents and personal documents need to be divided from each other. This can be done through good application management and programming.

The policy also needs to clearly state that the devices be compliant with laws and regulations specific to the company’s industry. For example, if you work in government, you need to make sure that by having a BYOD policy, you aren’t violating any legal or confidentiality policies.

There needs to be a policy about what to do with the device if an employee is terminated for any reason. People change jobs all the time, and you’d hate for them to be able to access all of your company documents after their time there is done, especially if they move on to work for a rival company.

Lastly, your BYOD policy needs to clearly state that each employee needs to follow specific security guidelines. All personal devices used in a BYOD policy must be secure so as they cannot be exposed to malware, viruses, hacks or any other security breach.

Since there isn’t a one-size-fits-all approach when it comes to a BYOD policy, there is definitely a way to cater it so it works for your company.

What Does BYOD Mean for Me?

Description :

If you've been hearing a lot about 'Bring Your Own Device' programs lately, you may be wondering exactly what BYOD means to you. A BYOD policy - at least a well thought out one - is intended to protect company systems from potential security issues by creating policies that govern user devices while also improving employee morale and productivity.

What Does BYOD Mean for Me?

You may be using your device for work-related purposes and not even realize it. Do you check your work email on your phone? It seems harmless enough, but according to NBC News, some companies are now even banning the reading of work emails on personal phones. BYOD is essential to controlling employee device use, but what does it mean for
you?

Do You Remember the Last Time You Got a Virus?

Chances are you've had a virus on your computer at one point or another. The issues with BYOD operate on a related level. Personal devices - including smartphones, tablets and laptops - can all be weakened to security issues. Companies are concerned, because personal devices that have access to the company network may also expose the network to vulnerabilities. Android phones are particularly vulnerable, with 99 percent of all malware being targeted toward this platform according to Kaspersky lab.

What Does BYOD Do?

A BYOD program essentially controls which personal devices connect to the network. Most BYOD management platforms have granular security. Granular security controls different levels of security access. One person may have the permissions to access an entire network while other guest users may only be able to access very controlled regions. Companies such as BlackBerry have created mobile device management platforms for this reason, and users can consult BlackBerry for more information.

The Ability to Control Your Device

The major concern for employees when it comes to strict BYOD policies is that their company will now institute some level of control over their devices. Some companies can completely wipe their employee's devices if they suspect there has been an intrusion or even if the company and the employee separate. For employees that have personal information they want to keep safe on their phone, this can be very difficult to deal with. It is important you find out your company's policies before joining their BYOD program.

The Ability to Opt Out

It's important to note that most BYOD policies do allow individuals to opt out, such as the one outlined by the White House. Opting out usually means that an individual will be required to maintain both business and personal devices or that they may have to jump through more hoops to interact directly with a system. However, opting out is still an option for anyone who doesn't want to give up their privacy and doesn't want to run the risk of losing the data on their personal device. Note that an inability to afford a device should not be a reason for your company to make you opt out of the program. Inquire about possible device or data plan reimbursement if you're interested in participating.

Following Company Policy

Different companies will have different policies in regards to their BYOD programs. Some companies have a zero-tolerance policy, whereas other companies encourage users to perform some functions on their personal devices or at home. The best thing you can do is learn your company's policy and follow it. While BYOD policies may seem frustrating to deal with, they are there for a very important reason.

Infographics are awesome! They allow people who are bombarded with too much information on a daily basis, to learn something new or digest data in a quick and easy format.

Lately, we've been working super hard with Coupon Audit on creating an infographic on “Smartphones in our lives” and how we use them to get entertained.

What We Do On Smart Phones To Get Entertained?

According to a latest survey, the standout statistic was that 65% of iPhone owners now say they "can't live without their iPhone." Of course, a smartphone is not necessary for existence, but for a lot of people, it's an important part of their working life and without it they would get less done.

40% said that they would give up coffee first, 18% said that they would stop bathing every day before giving up their iPhone, and 15% would rather give up sex than having a weekend without their nice device.

Besides these stats, a Nielsen study examined some basic categories of mobile apps that were most used by people who had downloaded an app. Here are the results:

- Games: 64%

- Weather: 60%

- Social Networking: 56%

- Maps: 51%

- Music: 44%

- News: 39%

- Entertainment: 34%

- Finance: 32%

- Movies/Video: 26%

- Shopping: 26%

Regarding games, the average time a user spends (hours/month) playing games is:

- iPhone: 14.7

- Android: 9.3

- Windows phone 7: 4.7

- Blackberry: 4.5

Another interesting fact is that smartphone owners with a housewold income of $75,000 or more are 3-5 times more likely to own a Blackberry or iPhone.

5 BlackBerry Tools for Your Business

Description :

It's common knowledge that small businesses have difficulty surviving their first few years in business. According to the Small Business Administration, 3 out of 10 small businesses fail to survive for more than two years, and 5 out of 10 go out of business within five years. Lacking the resources of larger counterparts, it is imperative they do everything possible to improve their odds of success.

5 BlackBerry Tools for Your Business

Brad started a small design firm three years ago. Business seemed to dictate he be in 10 places at once. He recently began using mobile applications on his BlackBerry. The ability to create documents and meet with his clients and employees while being away from the office proved crucial to the survival of his business.

The new BlackBerry 10 OS has the multitasking function called Peek and Flow. This allows users to use multiple apps for an "always open, always on" experience, according to Crackberry. Small business users can prioritize and organize operations from any location. Mobility along with the resulting increase in efficiency, organization and productivity can ensure success for small businesses.

Advances in cell phone technology makes the day-to-day operations of small business easier. These mobile applications are designed to assist in file storage, communication, monetary transactions or finance, productivity and more.

1. File Storage - PlayCloud 10

Organization is critical to the success of any business. PlayCloud is a file manager with integrated cloud service. Users can access files and directories from their BlackBerry device. They can then open, play and sync those files. PlayCloud allows users to sync files with a remote cloud such as FTP, OneDrive or Dropbox. They can also use the BlackBerry 10 OS’ SD-card. Thumbnails are created, which users can use to view and sort files depending on the task.

2. Communication - Cisco WebEx Meetings

Users are no longer confined to conference rooms and offices when attending meetings. They can tap into a mobile web conference from any location, while enjoying the full meeting experience, complete with simultaneous data and audio via Cisco WebEx Meetings. As a host, users can view the meeting list, schedule, start, and delete a meeting, and invite others to a meeting. Invitees can join the meeting via an email invitation, view active speakers, view the attendee list, view shared content and more.

3. & 4. Monetary Transactions/Finance - Square & Expensify

For conducting business outside the office, businesses have had to invest in credit card processing stations that employees could carry to complete monetary transactions. Now, employees who have a BlackBerry can easily accept credit card payments via Square. With Square, there is no sign-up or monthly fee. Instead, Square takes 2.75 percent of each transaction. The cost of conventional credit card processing stations has prevented many small businesses from being able to provide this service to their customers. By removing this barrier, Square has become a key application for small businesses.

When thinking about expense reports, an image of a stressed worker digging through piles of paper, trash cans and files in search of an elusive receipt comes to mind. Expensify is an application that will prevent users from experiencing this nightmare. Users can log expenses and scan paper receipts on the go. This is a free application for BlackBerry, and it makes a tedious task much easier.

5. Document Editing - Documents To Go

Knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint is essential in today’s workplace. Documents To Go is an application that allows BlackBerry 10 OS users to view, edit and create Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint files and attachments. It also makes it possible to view PDF files. The application includes a bi-directional file synchronization desktop application. This provides users with a way to transfer and manage documents.

A Rookie’s Guide To Choosing A Tablet

Description :

Let’s face it. There are just too many tablets available in the market today. While a lot of tech savvy’s are rejoicing, others find it frustrating to pick one that best suits their standards.

Well, you’re in luck because for this post, I’m going to let you in on a rookie’s guide to choosing the best tablet you can buy. So don’t be too hasty boxing yourself on getting the newest iPad. Below are some tips to ease your tablet purchase experience.

Is it for work or play?

Apart from some adjustments that you need to adapt to when using a tablet, you need to first qualify the need for one. Are you going to buy a tablet because you want entertainment to be within handheld reach? Or do you intend to use it for taking notes in a meeting or to document one?

While some brands guarantee their tablets to suffice any purposes, some are built to incline more on work than play. If you’re on the lookout for a device to help you out in the office, then a BlackBerry PlayBook is a wise choice. If you’re aiming to elevate your couch potato level, then have a go at the Sony S Tablet.

Consider the tablet model

Tablets come in different forms. Slate models are the common ones that use touch recognition and are more compact. Convertible ones are those that come with keyboards, similar to notebooks but with rotating screens. Hybrid models are tablets that combine both slate and convertible features.

Whichever model you choose, ensure your lifestyle and personality are well compensated by it.

Yes, size does matter

Tablets that have a 5-inch display are obviously more compact and easier to carry. Those with bigger sizes of screens are in need of greater security and safety.

Consider the size carefully as it entails the effort of having to hold one for a long period of time. If you’re someone who doesn’t necessarily need a big one and will only use it for games and basic browsing, then settle for the more compact ones. If you’re one who’s quite picky with better screen quality, then a 10-inch is swell enough.

Will you need a lot of space?

Another thing you need to ask yourself is whether or not you want a large storage space. Some have laptops and mobile phones they can store their information into. The ideal solution is to go for a tablet that has an 8GB memory for lighter files.

On the other hand if you need a tablet that will act as the main storage for all your files, then go for those that allow up to 64GB space.

Availability of apps

Apple has over 200,000 apps that can be used with their devices. Some androids have well built-in apps but are struggling in the third party department. So assess if you need a tablet that can be loaded with a variety of apps or if you just need a more exclusive one.

How much are you willing to spend?

Windows tablets can run up to $800 while some androids sell as low as $99. While you need to assess the features and functionality of a tablet, your budget should also be one of the factors you need to consider.

What you can do is compare prices online and see which the best deal for you is.

A tablet is one tech investment you wouldn’t want to miscalculate on. So make sure you know at the very least the basic standards of choosing one. From there, it’s going to be a lot easier and possible one of the best-delayed gratifications you can indulge in.

RIM Delays First QNX - based BlackBerry Devices to Late 2012

Description :
As many outsiders thought would happen, RIM has delayed the launch of its next-generation BlackBerry devices that make use of its new QNX-based operating system.

On a conference call with analysts, RIM co-CEOs said that, for a variety of reasons, the company has pushed out the release. In particular, Balsillie said the company has selected a chipset that won’t be available until mid-2012, meaning its first devices won’t be available until “the latter part” of 2012. The new chipset will allow greater power efficiency and allow for a better industrial design, RIM said.

“We ask for your patience and confidence,” co-CEO Jim Balsillie said on a conference call (which is still taking place).
The product delay came as the company reported another disappointing quarterly earnings report that fell short of original expectations.
Pushing out the QNX-based phones means that RIM will have to rely even longer on its current operating system, which has grown quite long in the tooth. It also raises serious questions about the company’s ability to retain attention from carriers, developers, businesses and consumers, all of whom have many other options when it comes to smartphones.
