The True Picture of Health

The health sector is projected to account for $13,000 per capita spending in 2020, which is well over $4 trillion. Current spending is $8,311 per capita, and many are wondering where all this money comes from and where it goes. The largest share of spending is by the federal government at 29 percent with states picking up another 16 percent. Private sector spending, including out-of-pocket spending, health savings accounts, and insurance plans, comes from households at 28 percent of the total and business at 21 percent.

Where the money goes is a more difficult picture. The two largest chunks nominally go to hospitals at 37 percent and physicians/clinics at 23.6 percent. The size of the chunk taken by health insurers and administrators is a contentious topic. Spending is only part of the story as well. Heart disease alone is estimated to cost $444 billion each year, and this number includes lost income alongside surgeries, services and medications.

With the American political climate in such a heated status for the past few years, there have been many discussions based on where money should and shouldn’t be spent. One area that most politicians are scared to make cuts in is the military. Housing, education, healthcare insurance and workers’ wages have all been mentioned, but only minimal efforts have been made to help these areas, with cuts being made in most of them.

The American military is the most well equipped military in the world, but at what cost does it really come. A U.S. military plane can cost over $1 billion, and several billions are spent on a nuclear program that hasn’t actually used a bomb in over 60 years. This type of spending is often said to be necessary, but if the actual cost was calculated and people saw what the nation was missing out on because of it, they may have a different view.

There are certain items we use every day, including our refrigerators, cell phones and light switches that we don’t really consider the history behind. A tremendous amount of work has gone into our most valued inventions.

Most of us board an airplane without a thought into the history behind it. We don’t usually consider the first sustained flight by the Wright Brothers in 1903 or Lindbergh’s first nonstop trans-Atlantic flight in 1927 but we have been flying in commercial jets since the 1940s.

Despite the fact that electricity was not fully explored until the 1800s, William Gilbert explored effects of related materials as early as 1570. It was nearly 200 years later that Benjamin Franklin completed his famous kite experiments. Every time we flush a toilet or turn on the faucet we use indoor plumbing, which established roots in the 1590s with the invention of the first flush toilet.

The shiny metal has also attracted a new generation of gold prospectors. Ordinary citizens who haven’t spent much time in the wilderness or beginning to ask themselves what it would be like to pan for their own gold. They are purchasing equipment and trying to recapture the excitement of the gold rush era, when all you needed to do was work hard, be patient, and have a little luck.

To pan for gold, a prospector holds a pan underwater in a promising stream and shakes it around from right to left. By swirling the water around, the heavier gold sinks to the bottom of the pan, while the rest of the debris flows away.

Early businesses were run by itinerant travelers and merchants. Individuals or groups would travel thousands of miles to purchase rare goods and items. After bringing these items back to their home countries, they could be sold for a significant profit.

The earliest incorporated business was formed in the mid 1500s in England. The Dutch East India Company provided a way for many people to invest in a shared business venture. Merchants and businessmen would each purchase a small share of the Dutch East India Company through joint-issue stock certificates.

The modern stock market has been in existence for almost 200 years. While business practices have evolved significantly over that time, the basis behind them has remained the same. Business is the way that individuals connect with each other to share goods and services.

Angry Birds maker Rovio Entertainment launched a new title in Thursday, allowing users to play as the Bad Piggies (A.K.A. Pigs or Green Pigs) from the smash-hit game. 

"Just out today, the new game is already No. 1 among all paid iPhone and iPad apps."

The first Bad Piggies mobile game hitted app stores today for iOS and Android, allowing players to take revenge on the Angry Birds who attacked the pigs with slingshots in the original game. The Angry Birds sequel is the most-downloaded paid app among both iPhone and iPad users.

Rovio has packaged the pigs in two flavors - a standard edition for smartphones and an HD one for tablets. The iPhone and iPod Touch version costs 99 cents, while the iPad version will set you back $2.99. Both Android versions are free from Google Play, apparently thanks to a special Google promotion celebrating 25 billion downloads in less than four years.

"It's an entirely new, completely unique game play experience. We've approached game play this time around from a very different angle. He said they could not live on the success of Angry Birds and that it was imperative to have a good game in order to be successful.

The Infinite Stretch of the Universe

The size of the universe is incomprehensibly big. Similarly, the particles that make of the universe that we know are incomprehensibly small. Just imagining how big the solar system actually is, which is just a small dot in the universe as a whole, is nearly impossible. In order to have any type of understanding of the size of the universe, we must compare objects throughout the universe against the size of objects we already know. 

The observable universe is estimated by scientists to have a diameter of over 8.8*10E^26 meters, or 96 billion light years. For comparison's sake, the Milky Way Galaxy, which is the home of planet Earth, is a tiny fraction of that size, 120,000 light years across.

A meal could journey greater than 4,000 miles to get from the farm to the markets and restaurants. Growing food nearer to the areas of greater demand decreases the amount of gasoline required to transport it from start location to its final destination. 

Minimizing the number of trips saves money and time. Additionally, this strategy can decrease maintenance cost of transporting vehicles. As a result, there is less need to purchase new vehicles. Toxic gases spewed into the atmosphere is greatly reduced. Urban agriculture is not restricted to fruits and vegetables.

It calls for raising livestock in the midst of the metropolis. Our "carbon "food-print" is the amount of greenhouse gases produced as meals go through the food system. Humans contribute to nitrous oxide emission when we consume food sprayed with chemical fertilizers.

How To Survive a Nuclear Holocaust

The Fukushima meltdown reminded a new generation of the danger posed by nuclear disasters. With one in three Americans living within 50 miles of a nuclear reactor, it is time to learn the basics of surviving nuclear contamination.

Radiation is invisible, but exposure can still be minimized. Internal contamination is up to 100 times more damaging to health than external exposure. This suggests several important steps to minimizing exposure. Radioisotopes should be viewed as dust potentially covering every surface of the home. Surfaces can be cleared using wet wipes and a wet-filter vacuum at least twice a day.

As airborne particles, radiation can be kept out of the home by sealing cracks with duct tape and recirculating air via an HVAC unit for 12 hours per day. More than a few minutes spent outdoors should be followed with a shower, and overalls or a duster worn over clothes while outside.

Healthcare has evolved significantly over the past few decades. With the development and spread of new communication technologies, doctors can diagnose and treat a patient from a remote location.

For example, radiologists usually operate outside of a hospital environment. After an MRI scan, a technician will electronically transmit at image for a radiologist to read. After reading the image, a transcriptionist will create a detailed record of a radiologist's diagnosis. This is automatically transmitted back to a referring doctor. Without this communication infrastructure, it would be impossible to diagnose and treat patients quickly.

Communication technologies also allow for remote treatment of some health problems. For example, there are several robotic surgery systems that allow a surgeon to conduct an operation from a remote location. Banjo

Designed to link existing social media users, mainly those in the younger 18-24 and 24-30 demographic, Banjo is a social media service that links users of Facebook, Twitter and Foursquare, letting them know via an audible alert when they are near friends and connections on those particular sites. For example, you could be in the same large grocery store with one of your friends from Facebook, and Banjo would send you an alert to let you know. Along with this location-based service, Banjo also lets users know about activities and events happening in their area that they might be interested in based on their social media activity and provided information.

SumZero

With the recent $1-million investment from the Winklevoss brothers, the new social media site SumZero, is definitely one that is going to be receiving a lot of attention from the popular press in the near future. The Winklevoss brothers, if you don’t remember, were involved in the development of Facebook, and have waged a major legal battle against founder Mark Zuckerberg in recent years. Designed in a fashion similar to Facebook - it was actually developed by Divya Narendra and an unnamed Harvard graduate - SumZero allows users discuss financial trades and exchange information related to the financial sector.

While SumZero only has 7,500 visitors as of September 2012, the site is expected to grow fairly rapidly, despite its somewhat exclusive membership plan. SumZero actually accepts applicants, and over 75-percent are rejected according to Narendra, who actually checks the applications himself. What’s the criteria for acceptance? SumZero only accepts certain people within the financial sector, commonly referred to as “buy-side” investors that work with hedge funds, mutual funds or private equity.

Ning

A sort of meta-social media network, Ning is designed so that you can set up your own social media type website for, well, pretty much anything you do or are trying to sell. The ingenuous thing about Ning is that it works for all types of business and individuals, from rock bands to attorneys looking to branch out in order to communicate with the public and get new business or gather contacts. Ning also helps users find people in their network that could provide them with services. Sticking with the rock band example, Ning could help a band find fans or a live sound engineer in their area to work with for an upcoming gig. Unlike many social media sites,

Ning isn’t free. While you can get a free trial of Ning, monthly membership is $24.95 for basic features, $59.95 for more advanced users looking to get more out of the social networking service, and a more expensive VIP plan. VIP pricing plans vary from business to business or individual to individual, whatever the case may be, and interested users will need to speak with a representative to get a price quote. Ning also offers a limited, mini-plan for individuals or businesses that just want to try the service out. As of September 2012, Ning has over 12,500,000 active members.

Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital

With close to 3,000 patient beds and grounds that cover 173 acres, Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital in Johannesburg, South Africa is the largest medical facility in the world outside of China. The hospital sees close to 700,000 patients a year, more than half of whom are HIV positive.

Stanford University Medical Center

Speaking of speed, the iPhone 5 uses an A6 processor which Apple has claimed is twice as fast as the previously used A5 processor. This means user apps and games will run smoother, load faster, and be less prone to lag. The storage capacity shares similar improvements, with options ranging from 16 to 64GB of data

In respect to pixel density, contrast, brightness, and resolution, the iPhone 5 improves upon what was already the industry standard: the iPhone 4. The iPhone 5 also now offers complete sRGB display coverage, meaning it can represent every color in the spectrum. The front camera provides a 720p video display accompanied by a massive resolution increase due to the lateral size increase. The camera also supports a brand new panorama mode which allows the user to create a pictures in massive resolutions of over 10,000 x2,500.
